BLAST FROM THE PAST - DEPOT BEACH, NSW 2008

During the weekdays my rise is a little early for my liking, I have become used to it and often awake just before my alarm becomes audible. This morning my alarm was set a little earlier and I hit stop instead of snooze. My body clock later ticked bang on time for a weekday, problem was I was due down at Batemans Bay at 7am sharp.

2012 DAIWA HOBIE KAYAK SERIES - MALLACOOTA, VIC

Photobucket

Round 12 of the Daiwa Kayak Series heads returns to some fabulous Victorian waters with Mallacoota hosting the round. Some tournament anglers rate this area the best Black Bream waters in the land (Bar none). Its an active waterway with thousands of holiday makers calling it home for many months of the year, nobody told the fish though. While the series will return to Mallacoota in October this is for many the last roll of the dice to qualify for the Grand Final. Will some unlucky angler have the Hoggiest Bream of the year on only to be swallowed by the Flathead of a lifetime? (Please note: This event is being organised by SSBS)

2012 DAIWA HOBIE KAYAK SERIES - MANDURAH, W.A

Photobucket

Round 11 of the Daiwa Kayak Series heads stays way out west and visits the town of Mandurah, Western Australia. After the Mexican invasion that was Albany many locals will be looking to knock off invading tournament veterans and rightfully claim a qualifying position (Nothing wrong with visitors taking home the glory). This is the last event of the series being held in Western Australia and for many it will be too long a wait till the next series heads back into town. Some quality fish are sure to be caught, with a variety of techniques. Will the winner be a Sandpiper with a Boss Hogg bag or some invader? (Please note: This event is being organised by WA Classics)

KFA KITCHEN - SOY MARINATED BONITO FILLETS

Photobucket

Recently a couple of mates gathered to celebrate one of their birthdays by going on a fishing charter. As far as I can tell they were all chasing Kingfish but unfortunately they were playing hard to get. Only two Kings for the entire 6 hours were taken (Luckily one by the birthday boy Ado) but numerous other desirable species were landed. Some great Bonito hit the decks and were filleted perfectly, and here is where I fit in to the equation (Got to love good mates and the benefits).

JUST WHAT DOES KAYAK FISHING MEAN TO ME?

Photobucket

Just what it entails is hard to describe to one not versed in the art, but the passion to get to a point in time that one calls oneself a 'Kayak Fishermen' (Forget PC trends here) is a journey in itself. From paddling freshwater lakes inland or pedalling brackish estuaries the results are merely the same, to get to a arrive upon a destination you wish to fish. While It's a great pastime worth pouring hundreds of dollars into its not all about strictly fishing from your kayak though.

KAYAK FISHING AN ESTUARY DURING WINTER

Photobucket

As we progress through the cycles of seasonal change many kayak anglers despair the looming onset of winter. The lack of morning light, accompanied by crisp cutting air can cause that dreaded alarm clock to sting for days. Kayak fishing in winter, no matter where you're from can be an arduous affair. The wind chill can be horrendous on the body, the ambient temperature taxing on the mind. The simple thought of a drop in water temperature and the slim pickings below can bring any seasoned waterman to his knees.

When comparing our nations cooler coastal areas some appear to cop only a glancing cold snap while others leave an impression of being completely frozen over. Your past experiences fishing these ‘doldrums' can easily be reversed by trying a different approach. A change in tactic, technique and a little experimentation will find you thinking less about the nippy water temperature and more about whats residing in it.

2012 DAIWA HOBIE KAYAK SERIES - ALBANY, W.A

Photobucket

Round 10 of the Daiwa Kayak Series heads way west to Albany, Western Australia. A few hours drive from Perth the Bream are on tap and the places are on hold. Come tournament day one things get super competitive, come day two and its now or never . The Albany event is the W.A State Tittles and apart from the Mandurah round later in the month is the last western round for the season . No doubt some big fish will be caught with 3 kg+ limits on offer. Will it be finesse plastics or the slow roll that takes the win? (Please note: This event is being organised by ABT)
