The 2013 Canberra Carp Out is on again Sunday March 3rd. Registration for the event is from 8:30am at Lennox Gardens with fishing from 9:00am till 3:00pm and encompasses Lake Burley Griffin only. The weigh station closes 3:30pm sharp so make sure you are in the roped off section to be eligible for prizes (Entrants must be present to claim). There will be a BBQ, soft drinks, ice creams, coffee, fishing tips and casting comps along with activities for the kids.
Hobie Fishing is pleased to announce the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Bass Series!
Bass anglers have the opportunity to get their kayak fix this year.
The series comprises four qualifying events and an end of season Grand Final delivering kayaker their own bass series.
New South Wales and Queensland whill host two rounds each while the Grand Final will head to Toonumbar in northern NSW in November, which like the BASS Pro final, a win in the kayak final gets you a spot on AFC.
The marine safety rules in NSW were fine tuned recently to make it simpler for people to understand when the law requires them to wear a lifejacket.
One of the changes was to remove the exemption for “surf skis” as used by SLSNSW clubs which made it difficult for compliance officers to determine what was and was not a “surf ski”. All craft of this type now fall within the “canoe/kayak” requirement which means that a lifejacket is required to be worn as follows:
- When more than 100 metres from shore on enclosed waters; and
- At all times on ocean waters.

Trout Cod were once widespread in southern tributaries of the Murray-Darling system, but have declined historically to a point where they are now listed as an endangered species.
NSW DPI has run a conservation stocking program for Trout Cod for over 20 years, resulting in the successful re-introduction of Trout Cod into areas where they had previously disappeared.
The Minister for Primary Industries is proposing to make an Order authorising recreational fishing for stocked Trout Cod in 9 NSW impoundments; similar to the existing recreational fishery for Silver Perch (another threatened species) stocked in NSW dams for many years to support recreational fishing.
The NSW government has announced it is accelerating the sale and closure of Crown roads (sometimes known as paper roads) which provide access to many recreational fishing locations. To do this they are changing some of the processes which publicise such sales and allow proper consultation with stakeholders. Please spend 5 minutes reading this so you understand how this urgent problem might affect your future fishing. At the end of this bulletin there are some suggestions on what you can do to stop this from going ahead.
Well another year and another series of Hobie fishing tournaments draws to an end, some may say the most sucessfull ever. Recently the Aussie team returned home from the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Fishing Worlds tournament with a couple of notable aussies in the top 10 and the rest placing well in a field full of great anglers.
No rest for the wicked though with the Daiwa Hobie Grand Final this weekend, held at the infamous Bemm River. Its going to be a hard fought affair with various techniques used in varying locations, with only one yakker pedaling away with the crown.
Parts of Lake Burley Griffin have been closed following a sewage leak at Yarralumla Bay yesterday. The National Capital Authority last night advised an area of the lake was closed to primary contact activities.A NCA spokeswoman said Yarralumla Bay, Yarralumla Beach, Weston Park East and Black Mountain Beach are closed to recreation activities that involve whole-body water contact or submersion of the head.
Warning signs had been posted around the exclusion areas and the NCA will monitor water quality and will re-open the areas with clear test results.

Saw this mentioned on AKFF recently and thought the information may be of use to readers, especially those who have had gear stolen whilst out fishing. While I have no affiliation with the suppliers the credentials on the actual product seem sound and the security offered would be enough to deter opportunistic thieves at boat ramps/beaches etc. My only ponderings on this product would be how well it hands a salty enviroment (With the usual Inox protection) and how well the rubber cap seals.
The National Capital Authority (NCA) advises that Yarralumla Bay is closed to all uses following a minor discharge of raw sewage.
The incident has been attended by NCA staff and lake management contractors, ACT Health, Environment Protection Agency, Roads ACT and ActewAGL.
The leak has now been stopped and investigation into its source of the leak is underway.
Water samples have been taken. A visual inspection appears to indicate the discharge has been contained to the Bay.
The NCA will continue to closely monitor and will re-open the area as soon as test results are received.

It seems Australia is safe for at least 2 years from the famed Super Trawler that was set to rape our seas. The Environmental Minister Tony Burke has quashed the trawlers chances with a ban. New laws were introduced to parliament today giving government more powers to protect our fisheries from companies intending to use the Abel Tasman such as Seafish Tasmania.
Main reasons for the change apart from public outcry are concerns over the trawlers ability to easily catch and kill marine animals such as Dolphins and Seals (Along with endangered Sharks). While many will no doubt know the chances of a ship this size returning to our waters come two years will be quite high it is reassuring to read that public outcry over the trawlers action was high on the governments agenda.

Every now and again something buzzes through our community strong enough that its heard right around the waters (Both inland and coastal). The word is a new Kayak Fishing Tour service is available in the Port Phillip Bay area and East Gippsland region. The second Hobie Fishing World Championship presented by Daiwa will be held in Austin, Texas, November 4-9, 2012. The competition will include top anglers from across the globe that will compete for kayak fishing’s most coveted prize.
The competition will be held on two of Texas’ well known fisheries - Lake Bastrop and Fayette County Reservoir each hold the quality fish to make a great event.
Air temperatures average a low of 51°F (11°C) and a high of 82°F (28°C). Seasonal cool fronts can drop temperatures swiftly in the fall season. Light jackets and rain gear will be necessary. Hobie Fishing Worlds jerseys will be provided and all anglers are expected to wear them during tournament competition.
Seeing a couple of kayaks on a trailer is eyecatching enough, let alone purpose built jobs with multiple Pro Angler kayaks in tow. I know some guys have some pretty crazy business trailers with all the bells and whistles but imagine my suprise when I got an email from Steve Fields @ Hobiecat HQ this morning showing off the new Hobie Tautliner rig!
(Wonder how many Pro Angler 12's that beast can hold eh?).
From what I can tell this is a brand spanking rig with the Tautliners perfect for loading/unloading on a daily basis. Used commonly in my line of work (Construction) they never, ever look this pretty, just wait till you see this on the road.

Canberra Angler Association once again holds its annual free fly casting lessons/advice on the lawns of Old Parliment House in Canberra.
The tution encourages amatuers to prolififc casters to attend and hone their skills. If you have existing casting skills your more than welcome to assist the new players.
