SOUTH COAST - WASP ISLAND, NSW 16/6/12

Big Saturday, widening swell patterns and confused seas...

We experienced it all at Wasp Island with some great fish landed but unfortunately it was a little hit and miss. Arriving early we scouted the swell and it was up a little higher than expected, 2 metres and a strange current. Wind was slim so we made our way out through the channel carefully and prospected for Snapper. Some used Plastics, others used Octo jigs while I decided snatchers and bait would be the key. Somebody must of told the fish as do you think I could land some sort of lively?

Couple of guys got some great Snapper and very rat Kings while I spent the day staring at the mountainous slabby set walls in-between feverously jigging up a storm. Final score was a measly Pinkie and a Rock Cod, no other by-catch was reported by anyone (As far as I know). According to Jason it was the worst conditions he has experienced there, but the multiple Hobie Quests in attendance lapped it up (2 x Quest 13, 1 x Quest 11, 1 x Pro Angler).

Reports from the next day saw a similar result from other anglers but only one landed (One lost) and a real tale of woe, think sandmonster rearing its head. I normally head north of this area but the easy paddle and intriguing area will earn a swift return, except next time hopefully its glassed out. The thing with Snapper is they are on or off, depending on factors that are out of your control. Sure you can limit these factors but when you're not prepared to troll or pitch plastics there is no way to be sure you will come home with a trophy (And even then it's not a sure thing).

Keep your eyes open, will be returning shortly...
