ACT - TOPWATER COD CLOSE TO HOME 8/12/12
Seems like its been forever since I posted a good old trip report with a nice fish. Dont get me wrong I have had a ball over the last few months fishing from the kayak and the bank but the species results have been a little so so. After witnessing a few super implosions off the surface I decided enough was enough, its past December 1st and there is Cod about. A night session was in order and with no takers I headed out after dark in search of a Goodoo off the surface.
The night started well when my first cast was smashed at my feet but no hook up, hadnt even made it in the kayak yet (Tied on a new lure, adjusting mag break on Steez BC). Couple of other people I didnt know out on kayaks but we all kept to ourselves (Hello if your reading). After a few nudges on the East Coast walkers I tied on a Heddon Fizzer that had never caught fish, one of those impulse buy lures that you never use. WIth this tied on a TDA threadline combo I could punch it over 50m, and on one walk back...
The water erupted and I was on, felt a bit of weight but expected small until it tried to throw the hook while airbourne (Yes, it lept, though it was shallow). Almost lost it in the weeds but with lip grippers ready I notice she was only just hooked. Slipped the environet under her and the hooks fell out, controlled the beast and got a photo and released next to the kayak. Placed my Bending Branches Angler Pro paddle next to it and gauged 72cm, a great outcome and my first Murray Cod for the season.
Look forward to doing it all again, this time on fly.
