TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - CLYDE RIVER AND ALL IT'S BENDS
The home-grown advantage, the local knowledge, call it what you will. While the Clyde leg of the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Bream Series held this weekend is as close to my home ground as humanly possible I'm a literal stranger to the waterway. The Clyde is a mystifying place with anglers cracking smiles or constantly cracking whips. Fishing is not predicted to be easy but doable, time on the water here will set you apart from others.
So many gorgeous systems around this area means I have constantly overlooked this particular arena, only fishing it for Bream this far down a handful of times. Flats, abandoned leases, holes, draining channels and rock walls abound in large numbers, perfect structure for wary Bream to chase the tide. Normally a round held here features a launch start way up river making certain areas impossible to reach via kayak within the allotted timeframe. The organisers have given it a fresh switch, something likely to play to our advantage from a kayak.
My strategy for the Clyde is to bomb some flats with a high-sticking lure bumping approach, venturing in and out of leases when I want to play hardball. Fish will definitely hold tight to structure but devour the flats when the mood is right. They are as strong fighting and tenacious bastards as any Bream found on the planet. Make no mistake these buggers will pull hard in the opposite direction.
