TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - BURRILL LAKE FROTH FRENZY

Photobucket

This Sunday's Daiwa Hobie ABT round should be a cracker, I Have a lot of fond memories of this place which will make this event super special. There are a couple of reasons why, but the main one is the amount of fishing I did here as a little fellow. Council shovel Flathead scones nailed to the gums around the boat ramp and cruising around on my dad's Quintrex Lazeabout 4.5. This is where I used to ask all the questions and receive funny answers, probably the first place I saw a Mr. Twister too.

Fast forward to the year 2013 and I have only revisited the lake twice, despite having gone there year after year on end. So many good waterways on the way to, and way past is my only excuse. Something is mystifying about Burrill, probably just the way the locals like it too. Last visit I caught a few Bream but nothing of size, too busy chasing around the schools of monster Tailor. The visit before that was for a Southern Bream Series event, and whilst the kayakers struggled the boaters brought home some truly classic specimens to the weigh master.

With long arms, shallow coves, flats and drop-offs Its big enough to get confused but small enough to cover your bases well. My strategy for this round was simple, follow the locals and concentrate on flats. The local gun pommy, Hobie's Greg Lewis isn't fishing this round apparently but another local is (Lets just call him Rob, eh Mr Chambers?). Knowing the general direction wont help me come Sunday, its time to study Google maps closely and pick an area and stick to it.

I am much better at fishing edges now with hards but have packed some Prawn imitation plastics if the bite is slow. There is a healthy population of Prawns in the system so heres hoping the Bream have been gorging themselves silly and are keen for some more, say Atomic Prongs or Gulp Shrimp. A good old surface sip session would be nice, there is rain about and a barometric change could be on the cards.

The locals pronounce it 'Bur-rill, but it will always be 'Bu - rell' to me (Froth and all).
