VIC - WE ARE BOUND, MARLO BOUND

Had a great weekend away with Ronnie Sonter and his mate Dean fishing Marlo from end to end. Wish I could say the weather was better but it wasn't, so much fresh dumped in the system. Most days it blew gusts of over 30 knots easily and rained sporadically on and off.

ANGLING ADVICE - BEMM RIVER, VIC

Introduction:

Located 632 km south of Sydney and 427 km east of the Melbourne CBD, Victorias Bemm River boasts some of Australia's best Bream fishing. Situated in the Cape Conran Coastal Park, Far East Gippsland, the inlet itself is renowned for its big Blacks (Often called the ‘Bream Capital’). The shallow 930ha inlet itself is fed by Bemm River from the west and Little River from the east and surrounded by forest and tea tree. Mainly shallow, the estuary features a mix of mud and sandy bottoms, accompanied via prolific weed beds. The town contains a hotel, a shop, a caravan park and a number of self contained flats and bungalows. Petrol is not available in the Town and should be purchased from Orbost or Cann River before you arrive.

GAMAKATSU HOBIE FISHING SERIES - GEORGES REPORT

 photo HobieGama_zpsb403b489.jpg

Recently I partook in the last Gamakatsu Hobie Kayak Series round for the year, held on the Georges River in Sydney's South. Having never fished this venue before I wasn't too sure what to expect but was warned of gnarly structure doting the shorelines. With this in mind I came equipped with a few different tools in the rod arsenal, including shorter rack rods and deeper diving lures. After receiving an updated lowdown on the arena from good mate Carl Dubois I was happy with my game plan and hoped to execute it well.

NSW - LAKE JINDABYNE 19/5/13 (TRAILER, ROO, RUDDER)

 photo jindytrailer_zps27eb21cf.jpg

This time of year brings many a weak capital kayaker to their knees. Snapper down the coast, Trout in the mountains... It's a tough choice. Works been rather pressing so when the chance for a road trip came up on a Sunday with a few mates I offered up the kayak trailer and away we went. Was great to see the trailer full to the brim with kayaks once more with three on the bars and one on the Roof. It was a bit of a Hobie affair with a Pro Angler, a Quest, an Outback and even a Sport ready to rock a ruckus on Lake Jindabyne.

GAMAKATSU HOBIE FISHING SERIES - GEORGES RIVER, NSW

 photo HobieLogo_zpsdaa4e31a.jpg

Its funny how time flies, especially when you are having fun... There has been a bit of a dry spell when it comes to kayak fishing tournaments towards these parts, luckily the drought has broken (With some rain and wind to boot). This weekend sees the Georges River round of the Daiwa Hobie Gamakatsu Kayak Fishing Bream Series, held on the waters accompanying Woolooware bay. Having never fished this region I am excited, especially given the quality of FB reports on the Bream their recently. I am, however optimistic on my chances...

GAMAKATSU HOBIE FISHING SERIES - CLYDE RIVER, NSW

 photo donuts_zps3be36962.jpg

After last week's disappointing result in the Gamakatsu Hobie GTS Round at the Clyde River Batemans Bay I was in no hurry to put this report up. It was one of those days for me the moment I arrived in the car park, things just didn't go well from the get go. That's not to say it wasn't a good day on the water, more like a few things happened that decided my fate early on in the piece...

TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - CLYDE RIVER AND ALL IT'S BENDS

The home-grown advantage, the local knowledge, call it what you will. While the Clyde leg of the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Bream Series held this weekend is as close to my home ground as humanly possible I'm a literal stranger to the waterway. The Clyde is a mystifying place with anglers cracking smiles or constantly cracking whips. Fishing is not predicted to be easy but doable, time on the water here will set you apart from others.

DAIWA HOBIE KAYAK BREAM SERIES - MARLO REPORT

 photo jimbobkfa_zps003be0b8.jpg

Well it has to be said, one of the best ABT rounds of all time. For anyone not in the know I am talking about the Marlo, Victoria round of the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Bream Series. Before this year's event the single biggest fish and two day bag limit of any kayak tournament anywhere was caught at Marlo. It was always going to be a hard task topping that one but 60+ competitors gave it their all in perfect conditions marrying mind body and fish together.

TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - ABT MAYHEM AT MAGIC MARLO

 photo IMG_1132-1.jpg

One tournament that gets me fired up more than most is on this weekend. A big dash after work but when you see the Bream on final days scorecard your sure to see why that 'Aint no thang'. Marlo in Victoria is home to some massive Black Bream, ABT kayak bag and size records and dedicated followers in the art of throwing expensive offerings to pigs of fish. This is the real deal folks, the Forster of Victoria and then some.

Normally I ramble on about what technique I am going to use and where I am going to go but this time i'm keeping it close to my chest. Partly because I am expecting the turnout to be huge, partly because there could be 10 World Qualifying spots up for grabs but mainly I am still a little undecided. Left or right, mouth or reaches the choice will be made on day one with a hopeful pattern cracked early.

I will say this though, lures will be long in size and skinny in profile, with an outfit suited for each application. There is one or two lures in the box that totally go against everything I just said, and they will be thrown, but you will have to tune into www.hobiefishing.com.au to see how I did come Sunday 2pm.

Bring it on.

DAWIA HOBIE BREAK KAYAK SERIES - BURRILL LAKE

 photo HobieLogo_zpsdaa4e31a.jpg

A strange location for some but a godsend for others, Burrill Lake captivated everyone's minds once the threat of major inclement weather wore off. A perfect waterway almost purpose built for kayaking played host to 27 brave souls ignoring glancing heavy winds and scattered showers. Reports on the area were slim to nill but this event had no prefish ban so I am assuming a few got out for some fish.

TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - BURRILL LAKE FROTH FRENZY

Photobucket

This Sunday's Daiwa Hobie ABT round should be a cracker, I Have a lot of fond memories of this place which will make this event super special. There are a couple of reasons why, but the main one is the amount of fishing I did here as a little fellow. Council shovel Flathead scones nailed to the gums around the boat ramp and cruising around on my dad's Quintrex Lazeabout 4.5. This is where I used to ask all the questions and receive funny answers, probably the first place I saw a Mr. Twister too.

DAIWA HOBIE KAYAK BREAM SERIES - NARRABEEN REPORT

Photobucket

Last weekend saw the ABT Daiwa Hobie bandwagon rock into Northern Sydney for a two day kayak fishing extravaganza at Narrabeen Lakes. Anticipation on the turnout from Sydney siders was high but unfortunately the rate of entry was a little low. Day one saw 43 anglers make the trek through the channel and towards the furthest reaches of the lake. Conditions were superb with overcast skies and a skerrick of wind.

TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - NEAR NORTH TO NARRABEEN

Photobucket

Revisiting Narrabeen Lakes has been on the cards for awhile now, mainly because I had a blinder of a session there a few years ago. Funny thing was I didn't weigh in a fish, oh and if I managed to one fish was top 10. Why go back then you ask, the amount of sub 25cm Bream on top water was ridiculous. I figure most of these bream are four years older now so should be well and truly legal, that and I have a better idea of where to go (Plus some decent bags have come out of there since).

GAMAKATSU HOBIE TEAM SERIES - ST GEORGES BASIN

Photobucket

While still flying under the Hobie banner, and run in conjunction with, this event was executed by the Gamakatsu Team Series. It may normally be a division of boating tournaments up and down the east coast of Australia, this year however sees kayaks included filling voids left by the now defunkt SSBS. The weigh in was different, some of the faces were new hat (Both boater and kayaker) but the venue was still clearly a classic favourite.

TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - DESPERATION @ THE BASIN

With all these comps on in my neck of the woods come this weekend I will be away on the road every weekend for like 9 weeks (Or at least that's what the missus tells me). I will be tired, thirsty and probably all fished out by the end of it but while I'm still fresh I'm off to St Georges Basin first. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this place, a vast waterway with lots of deepwater in-between my favourite haunts. By the time I have written this I have checked the what the rain is doing, yep come gameday it will be mooching around hard.

DAIWA HOBIE BREAM KAYAK SERIES - THE BEMM REPORT

After a long sortie down through Cooma and Bombala I arrived at Cann River late Friday afternoon. It was a surreal feeling, being alone in this neck of the woods. You see this region is normally frequented by myself and my associative families, all 12 of us (Plus ring ins). Year after year we make the pilgrimage to Bemm for our annual family holidays, some from Melbourne, some from Canberra. This time though this was my getaway, back to a tournament location I fell in love with many moons ago.

TOURNAMENT TRAVELS - THE ROAD TO BEMM RIVER

The first of many, hoping to start on a good note...

This weekend sees my first road trip for the year, all the way to the Bemm River Victorian round of the Daiwa Hobie ABT Kayak Bream Series. The event is sure to be well attended with guesses on turn estimated between low 50's to high 80's. I heard a rumour a couple of other tournaments are also on this weekend (Local clubs) so it will be busy, especially with close to 100 kayakers on the water.

MAJOR SUPPORTER - WETSPOT WATER SPORTS

Wetspot Water Sports have kindly jumped onboard as supporters to the site and my tournament trails throughout 2013. Scott and the team really know there stuff when it comes to all things wet and are Canberra's official Hobie dealer. They have a large selection of Hobie Mirage and paddle kayaks with a complete range of Hobie accessories. The Wetspot philosophy is if they don't sell it or have it in stock they will get it in, and thats right accross the board (Pun intended, seriously).

POLYETHYLENE WELDING FOR BEGINNERS (TAKE 2)

Amazing what some snooping round will find... The Quest needed attention.

With the upcoming Daiwa Hobie ABT round at Bemm in a few weeks I thought I would get my shit in a pile and organise a few things. Been awhile since I entered a comp and without the Pro Angler rig it was my original trusty rig that craved all the attention. I have used the Quest in tournaments before and it's actually a superb kayak to fish from, albeit without excess space and huge capacity.

2013 DAIWA HOBIE KAYAK BREAM SERIES CALENDAR

2013 Daiwa Hobie Kayak Bream Series Calendar (Revised Dates):

With round 2 of the series approaching it would be in your best interest to review the calendar in full and see what events you can make. With the GHS filling in some voids due to the demise of the SSBS (Squidgy Southern Bream Series) there are over 20 rounds to fish, qualify for the grand final and book a world's birth. Add the Bass calender and were in for a full athletic challenge this year, you and your kayak against all (Just dont tell the fish). Information supplied below has links directly to tournament information (Under 'Event info').

2013 DAIWA HOBIE BASS KAYAK SERIES

Hobie Fishing is pleased to announce the Daiwa Hobie Kayak Bass Series!

Bass anglers have the opportunity to get their kayak fix this year. The series comprises four qualifying events and an end of season Grand Final delivering kayaker their own bass series. New South Wales and Queensland whill host two rounds each while the Grand Final will head to Toonumbar in northern NSW in November, which like the BASS Pro final, a win in the kayak final gets you a spot on AFC.
