After a sleepless night, Claire ( My girlfriend ) and myself ventured down to Black Mountain on the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin, after a smooth launch at around 7:30 we spotted Red Pheonix ( Leigh ) loitering around opposite the ramp in anticipation of our arrival.
At this stage my kayak and i had not yet caught a fish and to my amusement Red asked me if 'Today going to be the day?', almost on cue i dropped my Killalure Pakrat over the side and commenced a slow troll following Leigh and the deep water previously occupied by the Molongolo River ( Before it was dammed to create the artificial lake ).
Cue bent rodtip, bit of weed around so wasnt expecting much... yep snagged on some weeds with a Redfin attatched... Billy ( My Kayak ) had finally lost his virginity to a 20-25cm redfin.
Went for a long lesuirely paddle alongside red around the points and islands with plenty of fish showing on Reds Fishfinder, they were schooling finally and the water temp was around 15 Degrees.
Red caught his first redfin pushing close to 30cm following up with a smaller one on the way back to the ramp.
Parting ways i bid the Pheonix farewell and returned home only to feel unsatisfied with water hours, an opportunity sprang up so i decided to go solo in the yak for a spot of afternoon fishing at about 3pm.
It was blowing up a bit with the yachts out in full force so i decided to press on and travel a very similar path to the one paved by Red earlier on.
About the same spot, same rod and same lure ( Pakrat ) i got bent like a banana and a larger Redfin came aboard, pretty happy at this stage but wanted to get out of the wind fairly quickly so ducked around the point and headed along the bank towards a group of Land based anglers 800m ahead...
Checked the rods and paddled on when i got close one of them yelled 'Oi Buddy... your rod!', i turned to see a huge bend and considering a had 6lb line with 6lb Vanish leader i was pretty happy to bring my FIRST Golden Perch aboard for a quick photo and release ( Apart from photography, fish handled with a comfort lift and swum to ensure strong tail beat on release ).
Pretty hard work solo on this yak, landing fish with the net, removing lures and releasing fish proved the ultimate satisfaction in the end though with my Rebel Crawdad getting nailed for 2 more Redfin on the return ( Other rod contains 12lb braid & 20lb penn leader ), alas i finally lost my Killalure Pakrat to a snag but i am definately going to buy a few more from K-mart asap... featured in a photo or two above.
Got off the lake late and visibility was poor, returned home one very tired and exposed ( To the elements and Mother Nature ) Yakker, i skipped around the loungeroom once i saw the photos and relived the moment.
